Page numbering guide

Thesis page numbering: roman and Arabic numbers in Word

Many thesis guidelines require different numbering styles before and after the introduction. This is one of the most common final-submission Word problems.

Typical thesis numbering rule

Always follow your university guide first. A common rule is:

  • Cover page: no visible page number.
  • Front matter: lower roman numerals such as i, ii, iii.
  • Main body: Arabic numbers such as 1, 2, 3.
  • Introduction: starts as Arabic page 1.
  • Conclusion, bibliography, and annexes: usually continue Arabic numbering unless the guide says otherwise.

Why page numbers break in Word

Page numbering depends on sections. If section breaks are missing, duplicated, or linked incorrectly, Word may restart numbering in the wrong place or apply roman numerals to the whole thesis.

The "Link to Previous" setting is a common source of problems. If headers and footers remain linked across sections, changing one section can change another section unexpectedly.

What to check

  • The cover page has no visible page number if required.
  • Front matter uses the required roman style.
  • The introduction starts at Arabic page 1.
  • Later chapters continue numbering without restarting.
  • Page numbers are centered or bottom-right according to the guide.
  • DOCX and PDF page numbers match after export.

Do not fake page numbers

Do not type page numbers manually in the footer. Manual numbers will break when text, images, tables, or bibliography pages move. Use Word page number fields and section formatting.
